The multiple lives of "Virtage"

When the Virage arrived in 1989, it marked the final chapter of Aston Martin’s hand built V8 tradition. The supercharged Vantage unveiled in 1993 ensured the era ended not with a whisper, but with unapologetic brutality, but the crescendo came in 1998 in the form of the Vantage V600. While the Vantage was never known for subtlety or restraint, I was left in exhilaration and disbelieve after spending a day with the first of five Vantage prototypes and one of only three which are known to survive.

Since the 2000s, Aston Martin has been synonymous with V12 GTs and V8 Vantage sports cars, based on the transformative alloy VH architecture. The successful V8 Vantage made such an impact in 2005 and became so successful, that it practically pushed the previous V8 and Vantage models from the collective memory. Only brand enthusiasts of a certain age remember the large, brutish, and hand-built coupés that reigned the 1990s.

Brabus 190 E 3.6S Leichtbau If German tuning e Brabus 190 E 3.6S Leichtbau

If German tuning embodies the eccentric spirit of the 1980s, then this lightweight Brabus 190 E 3.6S was at the forefront of that movement.

Intended as a promotional vehicle, the original Leichtbau disappeared, but Brabus spokesperson and veteran Sven Gramm decided this cover model deserved a comeback.

While driving this feisty piece of German cultural heritage, we spoke about the history behind it with the man who revived the legend.

Porsche 911 Turbo S “Leichtbau” Driving a muse Porsche 911 Turbo S “Leichtbau”

Driving a museum car is always a special treat, but receiving the keys to the prototype of one of the rarest and most impressive Porsche 911 variants is a dream come true.

Motorcar Journal spent two days driving through the Black Forest in the 911 Turbo S, which is essentially a stripped-out 964 with an upgraded 3.3-liter turbocharged engine producing 381 PS.

In many ways, it was a precursor to the GT2 RS, which wouldn’t appear until nearly two decades later.

Rare Shades – A film about Moonstone Porsche c Rare Shades – A film about Moonstone

Porsche collector Justin Roeser from Texas is so fascinated by the colour Moonstone, that his collection not only evolves around this pale lavender shade, but he made a film about it with Kevin McCauley.

This episode in their Rare Shades series is a deep dive into this cool but unsuccessful Porsche hue, as well as the starting point of a series about fascinating stories hidden behind unusual and iconic Porsche colours.

Dissecting the Testarossa with the man who designe Dissecting the Testarossa with the man who designed it.

When it arrived in 1984, the Testarossa was the ultimate expression of 1980s excess. After falling out of fashion, it has since returned as a style icon and one of Ferrari’s most recognisable designs.

We discuss the Testarossa with Diego Ottina, the man who designed it at Pininfarina, and drive the very car that was unveiled to the world at the Pininfarina stand in Paris.

We drove the first development prototype of the As We drove the first development prototype of the Aston Martin Vantage.

Aston Martin built five prototypes to develop the Vantage based on the Virage. We drove DP2055/1, the first of these prototypes, which was later used to develop the V600 upgrade package.

The V550 production car is known to be a brute, but DP2055/1 is on another level. At times, it felt like trying to tame a dinosaur.
