Colour has always been a favourite and much-discussed subject among Porsche enthusiasts. Guards Red, Miami Blue, Speed Yellow, Birch Green. Each is a shade instantly recognised and cherished by connoisseurs. But there are also colours that were largely unloved in their day, only to become cult favourites decades later. American Porsche specialist and collector Justin Roeser is so fascinated by Moonstone that he made a film about it, together with filmmaker and photographer Kevin McCauley.
‘Colour has always played a role in my life,’ Roeser explains at the very beginning of the film Rare Shades: Moonstone. ‘I remember growing up in the Eighties and Nineties and being hugely interested in shoes. There were so many brightly coloured shoes and clothes, and skateboards from that era were incredibly colourful, too. Later in life I realised that perhaps, subconsciously, that was why I was so drawn to bright colours. When I discovered old Porsches and realised there had been a period when Porsches were painted in really vibrant colours, particularly between 1974 and 1980 and then again in the nineties, I felt that same connection I had as a child.’
