The RS designation shared by these two 911s suggests that Porsche developed both cars with the racetrack in mind. The contrast between the Carrera RS Clubsport and RS America is every bit as substantial though, as the gulf between their respective markets.
To anyone not afflicted with a serious case of Porschism, the sheer number of 911 variants is difficult to comprehend, let alone unravel. Alongside the Coupé, Targa and Cabriolet body styles, there are the Carrera 2 and Carrera 4, with two- and four-wheel drive respectively. Then there are the various engines, with or without turbocharging, and a bewildering array of special and limited editions. The Carrera RS of 1973 was one such special edition and has since become a legend. In 1991, the RS designation made a comeback. Standing for Rennsport, or motorsport, it was once again applied to a lightweight variant developed for track days and racing.
